The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at National Taiwan University will host the “Literary Modernism: Perspectives from East and West (Marking the 135th Anniversary of the Birth of Osip Mandelstam)” on December 27–28, 2026, at the Humanities Building, College of Liberal Arts. More than twenty leading scholars from the United States, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Serbia, and Israel will gather in Taiwan to explore the artistic practices and theoretical implications of the legacy of modernist literature and poetry, and to propose a vision addressing current anxieties about the imbalance between the humanities and technology.
Another highlight of this symposium was a tribute to Osip Mandelstam, a key figure in 20th-century modernist poetry. Mandelstams poems express a deep attachment to world culture, a steadfast commitment to the humanistic spirit, and resistance to oppression by those in power. This great Russian poet, who was also a victim of Stalin’s purges, is commemorated every five years with events held across Europe and the United States. This year, Taiwan is participating in this event for the first time and is the only country in Asia to serve as a host. Through this symposium, we hope to contribute Taiwan’s perspective to the translation and research of Mandelstam’s literary legacy.
The symposium features the following keynote speakers: Pavel Polian (also known as Pavel Nerler), Professor at Higher School of Economics (HSE) and President of the Mandelstam Society; Sebastian Liao Hsien-hao, Professor Emeritus at National Taiwan University; Yuri Leving, Professor at Princeton University; and Georgii Titov, a promising young scholar specializing in Mandelstam studies.
The symposium is co-organized by the College of Liberal Arts at NTU, the Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (NTU IHS), the Mandelstam Society at HSE University, the Japan Association for the Study of Russian Language and Literature (JASRLL), the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), the Office of International Affairs at NTU (OIA NTU), the TSMC Education & Culture Foundation, and the Taipei Chinese PEN.
