This special issue, co-edited by Ken Chih-Yan Sun, Peggy Levitt, and Lake Lui, offers a new conceptual map for understanding how systems of social protection and cross-border migration influence one another across East and Southeast Asia. While previous literature on Transnational Social Protection （TSP） has largely focused on the capacity of migrants in Europe, the United States, and parts of Latin America to protect themselves and their families, scholarship on TSP in the Asian context remains limited — despite the fact that processes of modernization, socio-political structures, and belief systems in Asia differ significantly from those in the West. This special issue organizes its inquiry around three key axes: state policies and rights protection, the roles of multi-tier support networks, and the construction of cross-border resource environments. Contributors examine the policy practices of sending and receiving states in Asia, as well as how the market, third-sector institutions, and personal networks sustain migrants. Ultimately, this special seeks to bridge the gap between Western academic discourses and practices in the Asian contexts, while offering forward-looking directions for future research on international migration and social policy.
