Hui Muslims have a long existence in Southeast Asia, yet the recent increase and visibility of their presence in Malaysia and Indonesia started since the 1990s. Many Hui Muslims, primarily from the Northwestern parts in China, arrive in Malaysia to further study. Some of them also come as businesspeople or religious scholars. This seminar aims to examine the intersection between translocal mobility, business activities and religious aspirations of contemporary Hui migrants in Malaysia and Indonesia. It investigates how and under what conditions, the negotiation between Islamic religiosity and Chinese ethnicity, the interaction between Hui migrants and local Chinese converts, as well as the intersection between translocal flows and local dynamics take place in Hui restaurants, Chinese-style mosques and an online radio station.
