Position: Visiting Mandarin Language Lecturer
Host Institution: University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), USA; hiring Department: Department of Chicano Studies, Languages, and Linguistics
Visa Type: J-1 visiting scholar
Vacancy: 1
Period: September 1st, 2025 to May 31st, 2026. This is a 9-month appointment optionally renewable once based on satisfactory performance. The fiscal dates for the 2025-2026 academic year are September 1st, 2025 to May 31st, 2026 but the first day of the 2025 Fall Semester is August 25th, 2025 and the last day of the 2026 Spring Semester is in mid-May 2026 (date not posted yet). The successful candidate must be on campus at least 2 weeks before the first day of classes and they must attend the New Faculty Orientation.
Purpose of Position: The Department of Chicano Studies, Languages, and Linguistics wishes to create a Mandarin language program in the context of a broader collaboration with National Taiwan University (NTU). The successful candidate will help the Department accomplish this goal by teaching Mandarin language and Chinese culture courses. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will participate in support activities for the Mandarin language program, including promoting the program and recruiting students for Mandarin language and Chinese culture courses at UTEP and for the NTU study-abroad program.

Essential Functions:
Teaching
Teach two beginner-level Mandarin language courses (Level 1 and/or Level 2) per semester (in Mandarin)
Teach one Chinese Culture course per semester (in English)
Implement research-based best practices to deliver instruction through a fundamentally communicative approach with a content-based and/or task-based focus
Develop and incorporate a variety of materials and teaching techniques to enhance student learning and outcomes and to maintain student interest
Evaluate student work using criteria relevant to the course content and learning objectives
Provide a classroom environment conducive to learning, establishing and maintaining classroom control
Adhere to the prescribed curriculum and standards
Maintain student attendance and performance records
Hold regularly scheduled office hours
Promoting the Mandarin language and Chinese Culture
Advertise Mandarin language and Chinese culture courses
Recruit students for Mandarin language and Chinese Culture courses
Promote teaching and learning resources focused on the Mandarin language and on Chinese culture
Organize extracurricular and cultural activities related to the Mandarin language and to Chinese Culture
Promote the NTU Mandarin language program—study abroad in Taiwan scholarship program
Participating in departmental activities
Attend faculty meetings
Attend language instructors’ meetings and/or professional development workshops and/or training as requested
Required Qualifications:
1.具中華民國國籍,且在臺灣地區設有戶籍(Citizen of the Republic of China (Taiwan) with household registration in Taiwan)
2.Master of Arts degree or higher in Mandarin language, linguistics, and/or literature
3.At least 3 years of experience in teaching the Mandarin language at the college level, and some previous experience teaching Chinese culture
4.Native-like command of the Mandarin language (listening, speaking, reading, writing).
5.Highly proficient in English (paper-based TOEFL > 550 or computer-based TOEFL > 213 or TOEFL iBT > 79 or IELTS (academic test) > 6.5; test must be taken after August 1st, 2023)
6.Ability to work in a multi-cultural/multi-ethnic environment with faculty, staff, and students
Preferred Qualifications:
1.Demonstrated success in applying best practices to ensure mastery of program/course learning objectives
2.Familiarity with diverse teaching methodologies
3.Strong interpersonal, communication skills, and teamwork skills
4.Experience with Blackboard or another Learning Management System
5.Ability to use classroom technology and/or equipment proficiently
6.Ability to maintain an effective classroom learning atmosphere
7.Experience teaching online
8.Ability to interact effectively with the public, students, faculty and university personnel
9.Experience and/or skills in promoting Mandarin language and culture courses, and recruiting students
Compensation
Provided by NTU:
Monthly living allowance: $1,600 USD (依於當地實際任教天數核給)
One round-trip economy class airfare ticket subsidy (實報實銷,補助款上限1,750美元)
Teaching materials and equipment subsidy: $300 USD (實報實銷,補助款上限300美元)
Provided by UTEP:
Salary: $45,000 for a 9-month appointment
Benefits provided to full-time employees

Application Procedure
NTU will collect all applications, conduct the first round of interviews, and nominate qualified candidates for UTEP.
UTEP will conduct the second round of interviews and select the final candidate.
Applicants should submit the following materials:
1.CV in both Mandarin and English
2.Academic certificates
3.English proficiency requirement (subject to UTEPs J-1 visa requirements)
4.A video link including:
(1)a 3-minute self-introduction in both Mandarin and English
(2)a 30-minute Mandarin language teaching demonstration at the beginner level
(3)請將錄影檔請上傳到網路(Youtube或google drive),並將連結填於個人簡歷中,請確保影像內容完整,且3個月之內均可觀看
5.本案申請者應先於華語教學人才庫(https://lmit.edu.tw/sc/login)登錄註冊

備註:

2.本案依據「教育部補助選送華語教學人員赴國外學校任教要點」規定辦理補助及成效考核,受聘教師須經核定始予聘用,赴任前須與本校簽訂行政契約。
3.華語教師補助期間以一年為原則,獲國外學校續聘者得延長補助一年;每名華語教師受領教育部生活補助總期限累計不得超過四年。
4.本案申請者,經核定錄取,不得再接受其他華語教學人員聘任,倘有上述情事,則註銷當年度其所有華語教學人員錄取資格。
5.本表中未列明之權利義務事項,請於申請時自行向擬聘學校洽明,雙方權利義務關係於聘約中訂明。
6.國內現職國小、中等學校教師請事先取得所屬學校及機關(教育局處)同意並瞭解相關赴任國外期間可能涉及之人事相關規定。又赴海外任教期間無法採計為「退休年資」。
7.現任國內外學校教師,請事先取得所屬機關同意。面試前得先提供相關機構同意證明,未依照程序辦理者,恕不錄取。
8.錄取者請自行辦妥護照與任教國簽證等證件,並自行負擔相關費用,逾期未取得相關證明文件並完成上述相關程序者,喪失本案之錄取資格。
9.任期屆滿請配合校方辦理工作及教學之移交報告及說明,供下一任教師接續執行。
10.錄取之華語教學人員須參加教育部指定之行前培訓,並於任教期間每半年至「華語教學人才庫」(https://lmit.edu.tw/Sc)繕寫任教心得及成效報告(包括當地華語文教育相關資訊),同時無償提供教育部宣傳、推廣或成果發表使用;另應配合教育部華語教學相關活動進行經驗分享。
11.該校不實施遠距教學,如聘期開始前仍無法赴任,將延後聘期。
12.如遇不可抗力因素(如:嚴重特殊傳染性肺炎)影響,本通告保有延期、變更或中止之權利。
13.華語教學人員每年應參與增能培訓課程,研習時數至少十八小時。
