Content Exploring New Vistas:2008 NTU International Theatre Conference

Organized by Department of Drama and Theatre, National Taiwan University

◎ Theme of the Conference

   Initiated in 2006, the NTU International Theatre Conference is held every two years. In 2008, the conference will to focus its theme on exploring new vistas in theatre practice and theatre criticism. It is hoped that the participants of the conference will share their views on recent developments in playwriting, directing, stage practices, and cross-media/cross-cultural experimentations. In addition, new directions and methodologies in theatre/dramatic criticism will also be the focal point of the conference.
The conference will explore two types of theatre: the traditional Taiwanese and Chinese theatre and modern (western-style) theatre.

◎ Topics to be addressed at the conference

-Traditional Taiwanese and Chinese Theatre
‧ new developments in criticism: historical/textual/theoretical
‧ new directions in contemporization of traditional theatre
‧ issues concerning preservation and innovation of traditional theatre
‧ traditional theatre and contemporary theories
‧ multidisciplinary studies on traditional theatre
‧ other related topics.

-Modern (Western-style) Theatre
‧ new developments in criticism: historical/textual/theoretical
‧ new directions in playwriting, directing, and other practices: ----Taiwan/Asia/world
‧ theatre studies and contemporary theories
‧ dramatic criticism and cultural studies
‧ recent developments in performance study
‧ other related topics

◎ Working Languages
Chinese & English

◎ Participants
Scholars, critics, theatre practitioners

◎ Application/Selection Procedure
‧Before June 1, 2008, submit bio-data with a paper abstract of 1000 words in Chinese or 500 words in English (Papers that address theoretical issues with the critical analysis of texts are especially welcome)
‧Before July 1, 2008, selected paper presenters will receive an invitation from the conference organizer
‧Before September 1, 2008, submit full text of paper (5000-8000) words to the conference organizer.
